A post office worker from Dronfield, near Sheffield, has to be an entry into the unluckiest person of the year competition, after throwing away his winning scratchcard ticket.

38 year old Cemal Celikkanat bought a ticket for Camelot’s Blue game, and scratched away to reveal 3 £100,000 symbols. However, as they weren’t in the same row he thought he hadn’t won anything and threw it away in the shop.

The Royal Mail driver didn’t realise his mistake until the next day, when a colleague asked him to pick up her £25 prize, won after getting 3 symbols though not on the same line. The father of 3, who split up with his wife due to financial difficulties explained, ‘When I bought my first scratchcard 6 years ago you had to have had 3 in a row to win. I assumed that applied to all the games I have played in since then. I scratched the card and saw 2 £100,000 symbols in a row. I was disappointed not to complete the row, although there was another £100,000 symbol on a different grid’.

As soon as he realised his mistake Mr Celikkanat returned to the shop where he’d bought and disposed of his ticket, but there was no happy ending waiting for him there, as he was told the bin had been emptied and the contents burnt at the local incinerator.

Camelot have confirmed that there are still 2 £100,000 winners outstanding on the Blue game, but although the shopkeeper, Geoff Wright, was able to give him the serial number of his ticket Camelot have said that they will not pay out unless the ticket can be produced.
