Mecca Bingo Club Converted to Supermarket

It seems that nearly every week we are coming across stories about old bingo clubs being converted for another use, and this week it’s the turn of the former Mecca Bingo club in Toxteth to get a new lease of life.

After gaining support from the government Tesco will go ahead with what will be the largest supermarket in Liverpool. This will be built on the former Mecca Bingo site, and is rumoured to be the largest private investment in the area since the notorious Toxteth riots in 1981.

The plans were originally approved by the planning committee last February, but were later amended by Tesco after several concerns were raised. One of the main fears was that the development would lead to the loss of the Park Road post office, although these fears were put to rest with the news that the revised plans included a larger, self-contained post office, as well as approximately 530 parking spaces.

The government also confirmed that under the Shopping and Departure Directives legislation they would not be objecting to the project. Tesco will be contributing £600,000 for upgrade works and the new Post Office. They have also promised to set up a job guarantee scheme to cater for local unemployed people, and it is hoped that approximately 500 jobs will be created out of the works.

As the government has given it’s approval it is expected that the final sign-off, to be given by Liverpool council’s planning committee, will be just a formaility. The Deputy Council Leader, Paul Brant, was very pleased at the news, and said; “This will be a major boost to the Liverpool economy and bring in much-needed jobs and training for people. It will also bring back to life this part of Park Road. The ward councilors and the council are fully supportive of this project and pledge to make it a success for the community of Liverpool and Tesco.”
