Austrian betting giants sponsor football league

The Austrian betting giant, bwin, have now agreed to sponsor the Italian second tier Serie B for two years. The league will now be known as Serie bwin, and the deal is expected to bring vital revenue to the struggling league, who only recently separted from the two division professional league, leaving Serie A to run itself.

The deal, which will run until 30th June 2012, was announced between the Chairman of Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie B, Luca Ferrari and the CEO of bwin Italy, Paolo Di Feo, at the Serie B offices in Milan.

Paolo Di Feo said; “We are delighted to be working alongside the new Lega Serie B in this exciting new adventure. bwin is continually active in high-end sports sponsorship and this will continue at the international level. Today, with the advent of Serie bwin, we are facing a very exciting new challenge, giving us real contact with local situations.”

Bingo has been a popular form of entertainment for many years, and for some has led to some nice prizes, but a company in Sunderland have found a new use for it – as a networking tool.

The firm, Network North, is run by Marc Gordon and his brother, with the aim to provide structured networking and business development meetings. They aim to attract business people who can either pay a monthly or yearly fee to join, and who are looking for new business opportunities and support.

After seeing a life coach Marc was inspired to use the bingo concept as a relationship building tool. He said; “She had a grid with different things on it. I thought I can put a networking spin on it. It gets people talking. It’s about meeting people and talking to them”. He added “it works well – people always like it. We have done it about four times this year and it’s always a winner”.

For it to successfully work a minimum of 20 people are needed. Each participant has a bingo sheet which has 25 boxes with questions that need to be ticked off. No full house is required but the winner is the first to get two lines, which means they have spoken to at least 10 people.

Networking Bingo, as the concept is called, will be explained in more detail at an all-day event, scheduled to take place on Tuesday 8th June at the Falcons’ ground in Kingston Park. Other marketing tips will also be presented and the event, which will include both workshops and seminars, is expected to attract in the region of 400 delegates.

Mr Gordon commented “In times of recession the best way to drum up new business is to get out there and meet people face-to-face”. We think the concept is an interesting one, and although we always like to call house we’d be happy to get 2 lines and win in this particular case.

Ireland Set to Tax Online Gambling

Tax in relation to gambling, both online and land based, has been a matter of much discussion over the last year. Along with other factors, such as the smoking ban and the general economic climate, it has been blamed for the closure of many land based bingo clubs, who have also campaigned for a more even playing field when it comes to what various sectors in the general gambling world pay.

In a new move Ireland has now said that it will tax all forms of online betting. All foreign online casino operators who wish to accept Irish citizens as players will be taxed, which will be levied as a tax on advertising. Basically any company wishing to advertise to Irish citizens will have to pay for the privilege of promoting their brands.

As things stand at the moment off-shore operators do not need to obtain a licence, nor pay any tax, to offer their gambling services in Ireland, though from now on they will need to get a licence. Paddy Power, a very popular online betting operator which covers all sectors, including Internet bingo, casino and sports betting, doesn’t think the idea will work. They feel that, irregardless of whether the casino has a licence or not, Irish citizens will still gamble at them, and so the lack of a licence will not make any difference at all.

The only way this could successfully work would be if new laws were introduced, preventing locals from playing at off-shore sites without the necessary licence. At the moment the proposals are to ensure firms wanting to advertise in Ireland pay tax, yet there is nothing to stop citizens finding off-shore operators on the internet.

It may seem a good idea in principal to any cash-strapped government, a way to bring in some extra cash, but as it stands the proposals have huge loopholes in them which many operators, equally looking to pay close attention to their bank sheets, are bound to exploit.

Twist to bingo identify claim

On Thursday we reported the mysterious story of how Rita Tapping, a 63 year old widow from Whitley Wood Road, Reading was claiming that a person or persons unknown had hacked into 3 online bingo accounts and gambled away her money. The culprits were alleged to have lost £9000 and won £3000, leaving Mrs Tapping £6000 out of pocket.

The story was particularly strange as it was impossible for anyone to profit from this, as all winnings were paid back into the bank account associated with the bingo accounts, and no other bank accounts were added to the bingo accounts.

At the time our first story went to press it was reported that both the Financial Ombudsman and the Natwest bank had said there were no grounds for compensation, due to the lack of motive. She had also taken her complaint to the police and to the 3 different bingo sites to no avail. Two of the sites have yet to be named although the third is Dream Bingo. They apparently offered Mrs Tapping £3600 after she had approached them with her story. She went to the Natwest for advice who she said told her not to accept this, as then she would not be able to claim fraud. To rub salt in the wounds Natwest then decided it wasn’t fraud, but by then Dream Bingo had withdrawn their offer.

Mrs Tapping has now decided though not to drop the matter, and is now offering a cash reward for help in getting to the bottom of this strange affair and clearing her name. This case has attracted a lot of attention and Natwest have said that they will now re-investigate the claims. A spokeswoman at NatWest said: “We are keen to look into this matter for Rita Tapping, but have been unable to speak to her today. Once we have full details of the issue, which happened two years ago, we will be able to undertake a full investigation.”

Mrs Tapping herself has added to previous statements; “What can I say to all you judgmental folk out there? I have tried everything to clear my name going as far as obtaining the IP numbers from which these fraudulent transactions were made. I believe they played the slots on these sites. I have not an addict and have not touched a bingo site since this happened 2 years ago – I am an honest and trustworthy person who does not live off the state. I worked hard for that £6000. I asked for my details to be printed as I am offering a reward for the arrest of the person responsible. I need to know how it was done. As for your thinking why would anybody do this with no financial gain this was the first question I put to Phil Lake who works for the police force. His reply was “you won’t believe what sad, sick b*****ds are out there.” The police are treating it as fraud. I really hope something like this never happens to you. I have lost money, my good name
but most of all my beloved husband.”

This is one story that looks like running for a while longer yet, and we’ll certainly be keeping our eyes on it for you.

One of the larger names in the world of online bingo is 888ladies Bingo. They were also one of the first people to advertise bingo on television, but it seems no-one is safe from the beady eye of the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), who have upheld a compliant about a pair of TV adverts that were broadcast at the beginning of the year. They were promoting an 888ladies bingo game where they said the top prize was £5 million but the ASA stepped in after receiving one complaint.

One advert was just 10 seconds long, and referred to a ‘massive £5 million game’. The other was 30 seconds long and showed a woman screaming with excitement, as she’d won a bingo game which gave her an entry into another game with a top prize of £5 million, which was stated both on the screen graphics and in a voiceover.

In their defence Cassava Enterprises, who operate 888ladies internet Bingo, argued that consumers were familiar with the fact that although games were promoted as having high possible payouts, the actual amount won was often less, and they even quoted the National Lottery as an example. They also said that the adverts were mainly promoting the Golden Ticket games to qualify for the main game and not the £5m game itself.

The ASA decided to uphold the complaint on the basis that the ad breached CAP (Broadcast) TV Advertising Code rules 5.1.1, 5.1.2 5.1.3 (Misleading advertising) and 5.2.3 (Misleading advertising – qualification), and that it should not be shown again in its current form.

The decision was based on the fact that, although £5 million was available to be won by one 888ladies.com golden ticket holder, if they were able to match the 24 numbers on their card with the first 24 balls drawn in the game, the total prize fund actually dropped each time a new ball was drawn until 40 balls were drawn. Only at this point did the prize fund remain constant at £50,000 regardless of the number of additional balls drawn, and that this was the amount that would definitely be awarded to the bingo player who then completed their card first. They found that the downward sliding scale of the prize fund was significant, and therefore highlighting the possible £5million prize was ultimately misleading.

The Tasty Bingo site, as the name suggests, has a food theme so sponsoring the Daily Cooks Challenge is a natural move. New owners at Gala Bingo

Gala Bingo has been sold, and apparently not at a particularly good price. Shareholders will be receiving £10 million for their investment after walking away from Gala Coral, the debt-laden bingo and betting company into which they had injected £1.2 million of equity. The sale of Gala Coral has been described as the biggest UK loss in a private equity deal.

The new owners are said to include Apollo Management (25 per cent stake), Cerberus (18 per cent stake), Park Square Capital (8 per cent stake) and Goldman Sachs (5 per cent stake). An extra 20 per cent share will be owned by US hedge funds York Capital, Varde Partners, Strategic Value Partners, Sankaty Advisors and Third Point.

It has been said that the 3 major unlucky sellers, Candover, Cinven and Permira will be equally dividing the pay-off with other shareholders. The worst off is Permira who have lost their entire £370m investment in Gala, mainly attributed to the smoking ban, tax effects and changes to regulations. Candover and Cinven both injected £416m into the company but at least they managed to recoup £248m after refinancing and the sale of part of their stakes to Permira. 2 years ago the three shareholders had to inject £125m into the company to avoid breaching banking covenants, which would have given the bank the opportunity to take ownership of the company.

This latest development means that Gala Coral are now the largest company in Europe to be taken over by mezzanine debt holders. The mezzanine creditors will have to write off their own £550m of debt claims and in addition they will provide a further £200m in new funds. They will now own all of Gala’s equity, and this will cut the debt to £1.75bn.

The shareholders had been offered an equity stake of around 2% in the restructured business but declined the offer and instead have requested a cash payment. Although significant it has been reported that the loss is manageable for the 3 owners as this loss has been countered by other investments.

Nintendo has just announced that it will soon be releasing a new party game – this will be the first since Mario Party 8 was released back in 2007.

Satoru Iwata, the President of Nintendo, made the announcement at an investor’s meeting, and said it would be a collection of party games, which they expect will prove to be a major title for the company. The Teiban Party mode can be played by a maximum of 4 players, and includes bingo, roulette and other popular games.

It’s an interesting addition, and there is much talk as to whether it will have any affect on online bingo. Critics point out that Nintendo has no experience in this market, and besides which the game can only be played for fun, so there is no financial gain to be made. However, if you look at the success other games have enjoyed then it could make things interesting in the long-term. Probably more people play Wii Bowling, Tennis and Golf than they do the real life versions, and it’s a growing trend. Prices have come down now to affordable levels, and as well as being a great form of entertainment for adults and children alike it is also used by many as a way of getting, and keeping fit.

The Wii sports were a new angle for Nintendo, and one where they’ve done extremely well in. The have a wide array of customers, in terms of age and social groupings. Who knows how well they can do at bingo, and once they have attracted a vast number of players what’s to stop them using this player base to start up an online bingo brand.

We think this is not totally out of the question, and will look forward to seeing any future developments.

NetPlayTV Sign Deal With ITV For New Bingo Based Television Show.

NetPlayTV have managed to acquire yet another great television airtime deal with media giants ITV which should avalanch the popularity of TV bingo into the mainstream. NetPlayTv have signed a 6 month trial agreement which allows the broadcasting of “Teleshopping” airtime. This allows the company to televise gaming shows during the new night time teleshopping trial schedule on ITV1. The agreement is expected to start at the beginning of next month which is quite a fast turn around.

NetPlayTV plan to televise a new bingo format based show which will last around thirty minutes. The show could be broadcasted up to 6 nights a week on ITV’s flagship channel. The show is rumoured to feature televised bingo and keno games however the exact format has not been fully revealed yet.

This Milestone deal came off the back of the revised Ofcom restrictions that came into place last year. This loosened up the law surrounding transactional formats during the night time period in the ITV teleshopping window. NetPlayTV is fast becoming one of the UK’s largest broadcasters of gaming across a wide range of different media formats.

The chief Executive of NetPlayTV has this to say “When we established NetPlayTV it was with the dream of creating our own interactive game formats and getting them broadcast on a terrestrial TV channel … The agreement with ITV1 allows us to bring together a number of disciplines, from mobile to gaming in the delivery of this exciting new transactional TV bingo show for a trial period.”

Though the direct consequences of this deal are not going to be seen until the launch date it is safe to say bingo is fast becoming one of the UK’s most popular pass times.
